Magic was the 2nd dog that I ever fostered. Because of my experience with SA and the success
I had with Zoe, Magic came to me after my first foster, Jake was adopted.
Before I started fostering, Magic was adopted once, and then returned because the family did
not take her SA seriously and stopped her medication. Stopping her medication made her SA worse, and the family didn't
want to deal with it.
Once back in Rescue, Magic had to be moved a couple of different times because of her hate for
cats.
Magic came into Rescue in May of 2005. At first it was not known that she had SA, but when
her foster family would leave she would have accidents in the house. When she was crated, she would break out, and then
have accidents. The last time that she was ever crated, she broke out, and ripped her lip really bad. It was then
decided that she could not be crated because she was an escape artist (which is probably how she go the name Magic :) and
a danger to herself.
On August 11, 2005 I took Magic in as my foster. About a month after being here, we found out
that she had spay incontinance and would pee in her sleep. She has been on PPA ever since, and has had no accidents
in her sleep.
Magic LOVES her Kongs, and she will start to drool when I am making hers up. Normally Magic
does not drool, but something about that PB makes her drool :) When I leave, she will look up at me, and then go right
back to her Kong...which if you have a dog with SA, this is WONDERFUL!!!
Every once in awhile I will come home to an accident, but that is okay.
In April of 2006, I found out that Magic had Atypical Cushings, which is a condition that makes her
drink so much water and have to pee so frequently.
Currently, Magic takes some over the counter meds for her Cushings. They have helped her immensely!!
And I am hopeful that things will stay the way they are.
When I leave, I have a list of things I have to make sure get done so all will go
smoothly while I am gone.
These things include:
- make sure I leave the tv on for her
- make sure the blinds are open (she has killed at least 4 of them thus far)
- push all the kitchen chairs in (I have come home to her sleeping on the kitchen table)
- make sure that the garbage is put away...she loves do get into the garbage
- make sure all items on the cubboards are where she can not get to them - Yes, she is a counter
surfer!!!!!
In February of 2006, I decided that Magic had fit in so well here with Zoe and I, that I couldn't bare
it to have her move again. She has lived in at least 8 different homes that I know of. Moving her to a 9th home
would just make her SA worse. So I adopted Magic!!! She is here to stay!!!
In April of 2006, I found out that Magic has Atypical Cushings. The Cushings is the reason that
she drinks so much water and has to pee so often, and that she gained so much weight for no apparent reason. So now
the vet put us on a regiman to help her out, and we will go back for tests sometime this year.
July 2006 - Magic is finally loosing the weight that she has gained!!! At her heaviest, Magic
weighted in at 74 lbs. She is now down to 71 lbs!!! Slowly, but surely the weight is coming off. (In Cushings
dogs, the weight is difficult to take off).
September 2006 - Magic is going back to the vet for an ACTH Stim Test. The vet thinks that her
Atypical Cushings may have turned into Typical Cushings. Reasons being that she started having accidents in the house
about 3 weeks ago for no aparent reason. The accidents did not seem to be related to her Anxiety because they were happening
when I was home. She would not let me know that she had to go outside - which she ALWAYS does. Right away I figured
a UTI so the vet did a urine test. The test showed nothing, so I opted to have it sent out for a culture because that
is how we found out she had 2 nasty infections that last time. Well today the vet called and their were no growths with
the culture, so the next step is the ACTH Stim Test to test her ACTH levels. I will post when I know more.
